THE LADY AND THE DAM. Kate Furbish, born in 1834, was fascinated by plants from the time she could walk. In her day, it was nearly
impossible for a woman to formally study the sciences, but that didn’t keep the intrepid Furbish from her botanical passion, recording
every plant growing in her beloved state of Maine (et al., Page 147). What Furbish could not have foreseen was that more than 50 years
after her death at 97, her sleuthing would stop the flooding of 88,000 acres of northern Maine forests. The Dickey-Lincoln dam, a huge
hydroelectric project, was halted by Pedicularis furbishiae, a.k.a. the Furbish lousewort, a perennial herb found only on the shores of
Maine’s upper Saint John River and in New Brunswick, Canada. Discovered and named by Furbish, the little plant with yellow flowers was
thought to be extinct in 1976, when it was found on the land slated for an underwater fate. It took until 1986, but Congress de-authorized
the project to save the plant’s habitat. Surely, Furbish would find that a happy ending.
