when a venerable elm tree died, chainsaw artist Ken Packie of Otis, Massachusetts,
was hired to carve it into a sculpture (above) that features portraits of many of the
creatures sharing the habitat. Purinton (left) wades in an alcove of verbena and
hydrangeas. A handsome stone wall frames the grilling patio (below). Located just
outside the kitchen, it is conveniently within steps of the vegetable garden and herb
beds. From here, the property stretches down a gentle slope to the lakeshore.
