The Sum of Their Parts
Patrick Planeta and Meredith Basque find design is the tie that binds

Physically, patrick planeta and meredith basque couldn’t be more different. He is 6-foot- 5, with a boyish face, a ready smile, and a wistful expres- sion that says he is thinking lofty, ephemeral thoughts. She is a half inch shy of 5 feet, with
straight dark hair and earnest eyes that say this woman is a
problem solver. But they are design soul mates who met when
he was working at CBT Architects, one of Boston’s major
architectural firms, and she was a consultant to the company.
It was there they discovered their simpatico sensibilities.
planeta: “As a kid, it always made me crazy when the
teacher would ask for a ‘theme.’ Design is not a box on a
shelf. We believe that with principles and talent, you can do
anything. We are not formulaic, we don’t have a set style.
That has pros and cons, but it keeps it fun and interesting.”
“we” is planetabasque, the firm they opened in
Boston’s South End in 2007. Their work runs
the gamut from corporate and hospitality
clients to banks and law firms to multiuse
spaces such as the Modern Theatre at
Suffolk University. Then there is the
residential design aspect of their business, where they feel their background
in large-scale projects
sets them apart.

Meredith Basque used chunks
of cullet, glass scraps they
gathered from a foundry, to
create this art installation for a
downtown Boston office.
