basque: “We are architecturally trained.
We know building systems and can relate
the commercial to the large home. Sometimes it is hard to get over the hurdle that
we are not decorators and get clients to
understand the value of having us make
detailed drawings. We have a real methodology. People might oversimplify what
we do. They say, ‘Oh, it doesn’t have
to be perfect,’ but then it does, and they
wonder what went wrong.”
for the two, working on different types of
projects is stimulating. They are assisted
by a staff of eight, plus accounting and IT
help. Happy with the size of their firm,
but not their office, they recently moved
from an upstairs space at 535 Albany
Street to the street level and are in the
process of rebranding.
planeta: “Creating something unique
really inspires us. There are many
different vehicles to express design. Art
and fashion, for example. Going to shows
and museums gives the brain a rest and
opens it for new ideas. We bring that to
their like-mindedness also stems from
their backgrounds in art. Planeta attended art school before he got his bachelor’s
degree in interior design from Wentworth
Institute of Technology in Boston. Basque
earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from
Syracuse University in New York. Their
shared view on the importance of art —
in design and in life — propelled them to
establish a fine arts brokerage.
planeta: “I love supporting artists and
exposing people to art, to the story of art.”
basque: “We like to see the whole vision.
The art makes the whole thing complete.”
so how do two such talented people with
vision and drive manage a project from
inception to completion? It depends.
Either partner can see a project through
from start to finish, or, if the scope and
budget allow, they can work together.
basque: “Patrick has the ideas. He’s the
big-picture design guy. So often he’ll take
the lead. Then he steps out and I step in.
But it works both ways, and when it comes
to execution, either of us can take over.”
