EERO SAARINEN is a household name, at least in this issue of Design New England. The Finland-born architect and furniture designer is an icon of the midcentury Modern movement. His Tulip Series of tables and chairs is an undeniable classic. (The tables turn up on
Pages 39 and 149, and the chairs are on Page 138.) Our House Guest, interior designer Andra Birkerts (Page 112), notes that her architect dad, himself a Modernist of some stature, worked for and admired the master, who designed, among other notable buildings, the
Kresge Auditorium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the TWA Terminal at John F. Kennedy
International Airport in New York. The son of famous architect Eliel Saarinen and textile artist Loja Saarinen, Eero was taught that each
object should be designed in its “next largest context — a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, environment in a city plan.” He believed “the
purpose of architecture is to shelter and enhance man’s life on earth and to fulfill his belief in the nobility of his existence.” Now those are words to design by.
