Subsequent owners had modernized the kitchen some, but Sutton, a skilled cook
who enjoys entertaining, found it to be “just barely functional.”
Her solution was to build an addition large enough to accommodate a pro-
fessional-quality kitchen. The challenge would be blending its exterior with the
rest of the stucco-and-stone house. In addition, Sutton wanted the kitchen itself
to look of the period — no shiny granite countertops, stainless steel appliances,
or cushy furniture.

doors that afford a long view of Gorham’s Pond.
The stucco addition (above right) is built at a
lower elevation, deferring to the main house. The
Spanish roof tiles were custom made to match the
color and texture of the originals.
