original venerable crab apples predate the formal garden
but were incorporated into the design, cosseted by purple
smoketree (Cotinus coggygria ‘Grace’) and Berberis thunbergii
‘Royal Cloak’. Along one of the side axes (facing page, top),
topiary lilacs (Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin’) wade in arborvitae
(‘Mr. Bowling Ball’). The view from the meadow (facing page,
bottom) captures a phantom glimpse of the garden through
a wrought-iron gate hung on granite curbstones.
