Local Boys Make Good
the mentors in design (MIDDIES) program was created in 2011 by Design
New England to promote, cultivate, and recognize mentors in architecture,
interior design, building, landscape design, and related fields. The 2016
honorees include builders, architects, and a furniture maker and teacher.
oug Hanna and Alex Slive met in high school — Cambridge High and Latin in Cambridge, Massachusetts — in
1969. It was not an era of laserlike career focus, and they
both knocked about after graduation. “It was that kind
of time,” says Slive (at right in photo), who followed an eight-year college plan and started a floor-sanding business, while Hanna (at left
in photo) studied on both the East and West Coasts and worked for a
masonry restoration company in Boston.
They founded S (Slive) + H (Hanna) Construction Inc. in Cambridge in 1978, with one of them working Tuesdays and Thursdays
while the other took college classes, then switching roles on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays. For 15 years, they were in the field swinging
hammers, their co-workers more like peers than employees, a collegi-ality that remains in the company mix. “It’s like working for my two
older brothers,” says S+H project manager Michael Segal.
Still, “somebody has to drive the bus,” says Hanna, so, with
