Inspired by the “M” in
Mary Tyler Moore’s
1970s TV show, Porto
hung a metal “R” near
her front door. She
added the “M” for Mike,
but notes with a laugh
that the “R” is bigger.
For the base cabinets, she chose a natural wood finish, while tall upper units sport
Poggenpohl’s signature high-gloss lacquer
finish in Pebble Gray. She specified the same
shade of gray for the kitchen ceiling, a design
trick that expands the sense of space. Countertops and backsplash are pale, marbled
Silestone quartz, while the wall behind the
stove is lined with mirrored Venetian Mesh
tile from Ann Sacks.
Porto placed the living room furniture
between the kitchen and the dining table, a
configuration that works well when entertaining. “Often, we push the table against the window to function as a buffet,” she says. “That’s
why I chose not to hang a chandelier over it,
for her 25th birthday, Porto bought a painted
chest in Hong Kong. Today it takes pride of place in
the entry of her new home, accompanied by a
statue of a kneeling monk on the floor beside it.
Wall colors range from rose-tinted white in the
living room to a saturated warm gray here.
