this is a vacation getaway (the owners use it
from May to October on weekends and take
advantage of the many restaurants within
walking distance), the kitchen is used more
for hanging out and gathering for quick
meals than for heavy-duty cooking.
The footprint of the kitchen remained
the same, although a laundry closet was
removed to create space for a dining table.
“They wanted the kitchen to feel more
open,” says Porto, “and they wanted peninsula seating so they could be in the kitchen
and have family and friends with them.”
Metal chairs and stools welcome wet bathing suits with a no-harm-done functional-ity. A sliding glass door opens to a small
north-facing balcony, just big enough for a
grill and a glimpse of the ocean (the south-facing living room has the full ocean view).
To stay in touch with the office and e-mail,
the owners also asked for a small computer
area in the kitchen, which Porto tucked into
the peninsula nearest the slider.
Hidden engineering from Poggenpohl’s “+Motion Drive” electronic system, which responds to a light touch to cabinet doors and drawers, eliminates the need
for cabinet pulls. The only hardware in the
room, other than the handle of the 27-inch-
wide built-in refrigerator, is on a tall, thin
pullout pantry next to it.
