above the clearing. “We picked a spot filled
with regrowth, so we wouldn’t have to cut
native trees.” Through selective cutting, an

In designing the home, “we knew we
wanted it to be low on one side and high on
the other,” says Jim. “I was busy drawing sec-
tions that had most of the rooms on the high
side, while Laure was making physical mod-
els from paper and cardboard.”
“The first ‘Eureka!’ moment was when I
cut a piece of paper shaped like a wing,” says
Laure. The second turning point, adds Jim,
was when early designs, which incorporated
several guest rooms, were simply too big. “We
wanted a minimal footprint for both financial
and ecological reasons,” he says. “And we
wanted everything to fit under a single, unify-
