OUTDOOR BLOSSOMS Drawing upon an extensive library of horticultural
images that she’s collected over the years and used to create prints and linen
pillows, this spring Laurie Grossman of Ox Bow Decor in Weston, Massachusetts, is
printing her botanical images on solution-dyed acrylic fabric (resistant to stains,
fading, mold, and mildew) for plush pillows that can be enjoyed outdoors. Incorporating intricate images of flowers such as amaryllis (at right, left) and pink
magnolia (at right, right) as well as plants and ferns, the pillows, which have a
polyester filling and measure 20 inches square, add comfort and style to plein-air
living. Ox Bow Decor; oxbowdecor.com for information on where to buy.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE Ashfield, Massachusetts, blacksmith Ned James honed his trade at Old Sturbridge Village in
Sturbridge, Massachusetts, in the 1970s before starting his own
shop. Today, he is still turning out custom architectural metalwork
and specially requested items such as the steel Möbius strip on the
Boston Society of Architects’ 2012 Design Awards trophy designed
by Ashfield Stone (see Page 45). With an eye on the garden, James
devised a line of tools, including (left, from top) a weeder,
cultivator, hand hoe, and harrow, all beautifully hand-forged from
S- 2 shock-resistant tool steel with birch handles made in Maine. In
the best of New England blacksmithing traditions (see Page 94),
they are up to their task. Ashfield Tools; ashfieldtools.nedjames.
