three legs of the design stool on which interior designer Michael Carter
and his partner Lynn Dayton built their retail venture, Carter Dayton
Home, a full-range furniture and home accessories store they opened in
October in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
The store is set up as a series of rooms — library, living room, dining
room, master bedroom, children’s room — and galleries such as the one
filled with lighting fixtures from Visual Comfort in Texas. There is also a
space devoted to carpets, among them The New England Collection’s
needlepoint, rag, and hooked rugs and Tamarian Tibetan carpets. Though
each space is a show-stopper, consumers will find all of them accessible.
The store carries Hickory Chair Furniture, a venerable manufacturer
founded in 1911 in Hickory, North Carolina. “They have an array of styles,
custom finishes, and fabrics and accommodate very specific made-to-
measure dimensions, so that pieces can be as high as you want and as
deep as you want,” Carter says.
A design library lets customers peruse fabric samples. “They can have
their own workrooms make their curtains or upholster their furniture, or
we will be happy to do it for them in our workrooms,” says Carter.
Dayton, who has a flair for entertaining, has stocked distinctive
candles, Plat du Jour paper place mats, and napkin rings packaged so
beautifully that all they need is a bow. “Tabletop accessories,” she says,
“should be as special as a painting on the wall.” Carter Dayton Home;
