throughout, while the cabins rely on wood
stoves. In addition, the lodge is sited to
take full advantage of the sun — it picks up
“eight degrees of free heat” on some winter
days, says Dethlefsen. Locally sourced
materials, a key part of LEED construction, included windows from Quebec, lumber from nearby sawmills, and furniture
built from trees felled on the property. The
Jotul wood stoves are forged and built just

bedding in every cabin is from L. L. Bean in
Freeport, Maine.
The camp is open year-round to AMC
members and nonmembers alike, with six-week breaks in early winter and during
spring’s black-fly season. During a recent
visit, the place was not quite at its 66-per-
son capacity, but the bustle and camaraderie in the dining room (and the flank steak
dinner being served) made it hard to believe
this was deep wilderness. Guests spoke of
fly-fishing, hiking the nearby gorge known
as Gulf Hagas, and returning in winter to
ski cross-country on groomed trails from
Gorman Chairback to the two other AMC
Pond and the summits of Third, Fourth,
and Barren mountains. Along the ridgeline
runs the Appalachian Trail. Bill Bryson, if
you’re up there, come on down!
