GIVE AND TAKE • Two bathrooms in an 1890 Victorian house
add and subtract space in a just-right makeover
ARA AND CHRISTIAN
Fay love their three kids. But
why should two boys and a girl
under the age of 9 have gotten the run of an 85-square-foot
bathroom while their parents
struggled with a master bath less
than half that size and so badly
laid out it was barely functional?
Indeed, it was described more
as a water closet than a proper
bathroom by Kert Heinecke, the
architect from Feinmann Inc.,
a design-and-build company in
Lexington, Massachusetts. He
redesigned both baths into beautiful, fully functional rooms that
live up to the architecture of the
stately 1890 Victorian house
the Fays bought in Arlington,
Massachusetts, two years ago.

the detailed archway and room divider add architectural interest o the master bath while also drawing the ye to the vanity and Ann Sacks tile floor.
