“Grad students from [the University of Rhode
Island] come here quite often to do research or
borrow books,” says Smayda as she sorts through a
collection that had just been donated by a weaver
from Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
Smayda is not only an accomplished weaver
but also a nationally recognized teacher, giving
classes and seminars at the American Textile
History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts, and
the John C. Campbell Folk School in North
Carolina and serving as a visiting lecturer at
the University of Rhode Island. It is the chance
to work under her expert direction and that of
her assistant, Suzi Ballenger, that brings stu-
dents from Rhode Island, Connecticut, and
