MENTORS IN DESIGN
Established to promote, cultivate, and recognize mentoring, the
Mentors of the Year
TED + KIM GOODNOW
Woodmeister Master Builders
“What they did that really distinguishes them,” says David Shapiro, presi-
dent and CEO of Mass Mentoring and one of the panelists who selected
our 2011 Mentors in Design, “is institutionalize mentoring. They made it part
of the corporate culture.” Little wonder that in 2009 Woodmeister Master
Builders, a residential building company with 110 employees in Holden,
Massachusetts, was among the best small workplaces named by The Boston
Globe and The Wall Street Journal, where Ted and Kim Goodnow were cited
for “employee empowerment” and “a commitment to extensive education,
training, and professional certification.” Their mentoring initiatives reach
beyond employees, however. With Woodmeister Academy, they introduce
high school students to cabinetmaking, for example, and Boy and Girl Scouts
can work toward merit badges in classes covering woodworking, architec-
ture, and home repair.
