DREAM WEAVERS • At Rhode Island’s Saunderstown Weaving School,
an enchanting barn holds everything a serious student needs
norma smayda, founder of the Saunderstown Weaving School, stands in the barn/classroom where each of the school’s 40 looms holds a work in progress.
DOWN A NARROW GRAVEL LANE LINED with towering pines in the heart of Rhode Island stands a barn whose utilitarian facade gives no indication of the wonders within: Some 40 looms — one dating to
the late 1800s, another from the Bauhaus — stand ready
for the dedicated weavers who come and go, each one
occupying a particular loom for a spell of time, but all fully
aware of the timelessness of the art they are undertaking.
