the island, is an inviting spot to gather and interact with the chef. The pine, which is also used for a
built-in desk, adds a touch of earthiness to the clean,
bright space and ties in with the rustic sensibility of
the house. The new space (just like the living room
mantel, coffee table, and dining room nooks) is also a
perfect landing spot for some of the Emriches’ favorite
finds — from the scale model of a red camper on the
table to the cast-iron pig that sits on a windowsill.
“We collect art and objects,” says Emrich, “and
they’re in the space. I like the play of the old and
quiet tradition with the new, and they help make
that transition.”
