the gallery occupies one-half of Olsen’s
home, where bright white shelves are filled with
an inventory of framed prints, hand-painted
ceramics, and affordable greeting cards.
Massachusetts’s Cape Ann. Her house doubles as an eponymous gallery where she sells
original prints and hand-painted pottery.
Just down the street, Olsen also fronts Isla
Beach House, a Lilliputian boutique filled
with breezy, bohemian clothes that reflect
her new life.
“It was time to lighten the load,” she says.
“And I’m really happy. The art community is
great, like a little village.”
But to understand how she managed to
bounce back so heartily from the Claiborne
fiasco, it’s necessary (for us and for her) to go
back to the beginning.
Originally from Connecticut, Olsen
graduated from Montserrat College of Art in
Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1974 with a degree
in painting and printmaking. Her first experiments with textiles were “potato prints,”
stamps made from carving a design into half
