SE TTING THINGS RIGHT | Choosing reusable plastic place mats over
throwaway paper is appealing, but silicone is better. The synthetic
material is favored over plastics from a health, safety, and environmental
perspective. It has a low toxicity and can withstand high heat and
UV sunlight (which often degrades volatile plastic). Our favorite
silicone place mats are by Modern-Twist. “Doileez” ($25 for two)
features a pretty scalloped edge on FDA-grade silicone with a hand-silk-screened pattern. Plus, Modern-Twist designer Kat Nouri
donates a percentage of her profits to
environmentally and socially conscious
organizations. Available at Didriks in
Cambridge, Massachusetts; 617-354-5700,

Derring-Do-It-Yourself Eco-Chic Home ($22, Skipstone Press, available in May) features more than 60 easy-to-make projects that transform recycled, reclaimed, and otherwise readily available materials into gorgeous home accessories. None of the projects is overly ambitious (turning old teacups into containers for soy candles, for example), and there isn't a hint of homemade homeliness. Afterall, author Emily Anderson has produced projects for no less an aesthetic authority than Martha Stewart.
