Beverly, Massachusetts, for capturing rainwater. Rainwater Recovery’s integrated systems,
which typically cost between $25,000 and
$30,000, go way beyond rain barrels.
Computer controls, which in this house
are in the basement, automatically pump
water from the cistern when the irrigation system calls for it. Only if the cistern is empty
do pressure-sensitive valves switch over to the
municipal water supply. Reidy estimates that
it takes as much as 30,000 gallons a month
to water the lawns and gardens on the nearly
1-acre property. “We’re providing about 24,000
to 25,000 gallons of that a month,” he says.
Calling himself “a practical environmentalist,” Reidy designed his first
rainwater harvesting system for his own home
in Westwood, Massachusetts, when he was
unable to find a local company to do it. In the
fall of 2003, recognizing a business opportunity, he launched Rainwater Recovery Inc.
The business got a shot in the arm when
persistent water shortages in the Ipswich River
watershed resulted in limits on withdrawals,
especially for such nonessential uses as watering lawns. The shortages were responsible for
close to 40 orders for Rainwater Recovery systems in the Ipswich River area.
“Around 2006 to 2007, all green building
projects began incorporating water harvesting,”
Rainwater Recovery has become so busy,
in fact, that it no longer installs systems and
just designs them. To date, Reidy estimates that
his company has designed two dozen large residential systems, three dozen for smaller homes,
and perhaps 50 large commercial systems.
Among Rainwater Recovery’s most high-profile projects are the Government Services
Administration building in Philadelphia, the
Visual Arts Center at Dartmouth College
in Hanover, New Hampshire, SAP United
States’ headquarters in Newtown Square,
Pennsylvania, and the Olmsted Center at
Corona Park in Flushing Meadows, New
“I’m a water guy,” says Reidy. “I love the
idea of taking the water off your roof and using
it locally.” ::
