ECO STRUCTURES, INC.
Excellence in craftsmanship and personal service
Empty and dark since then, the space
recently has been brought back to life by a
hardy band of D/R alumni, including Jane
Thompson and Wheeler, who are marking
the building’s 40th anniversary with a D/R
retrospective. “It’s so cool to be able to go
back in time,” says Wheeler with a huge grin.
Unlocking the building’s front door, he ushers
a lucky visitor into a brightly lit scene from the
1970s — one that feels as fresh as today. From
the modish living room set to a long line of
Marimekko pillows to a facsimile of the store’s
original neon sign, the D/R look seems to have
barely aged. Upstairs, rows of spotless, vibrant
Marimekko dresses hang in the windows.
The display will be in place until sometime this winter. Even though the building
itself is not open to the public, this so-called
“museum of the street” brings people to a dead
stop. Cameras come out, along with smiles
from happy memories — and many would-be
customers futilely try to open the door. “Man,
I wish it were reopening right now,” says one
such starry-eyed passerby. “I’d buy anything in
there in a heartbeat.”
the store’s wares included Scandinavian
blue-and-white glazed pottery. D/R fans
nationwide donated original pieces, including
these bowls, for the current display.
