Simple wood casings and trim painted in soft white and neutral colors set the stage for Roberts’s true passion: superb, indirect lighting. “I love
what lighting can do and how it can change a space,” he says. “A good light
source is multidirectional and bounces off ceilings and walls. You don’t
want shadows.”
In the living room, for instance, recessed halogen lights frame the
original stone fireplace and draw attention to the artwork on the mantel.
On a ledge in the master bath, hollowed-out wax candles disguise 3-watt
incandescent bulbs that flicker. “At night, it creates a beautiful ambient
light,” says Roberts.
In the living room, bedrooms, and dining room, Roberts used lamps
and sconces made of hand-forged iron and hand-sewn parchment from
Gemma Pova, a shop in Barcelona that he discovered while traveling in
Spain. More parchment-shaded lights grace the vanity mirror in the mas-ter-bath as well. “Parchment gives a beautiful glow,” says Roberts.
