the grill farther from the house, which cuts
down on smoke and smells wafting indoors.
The hood is hidden in an overhang faced
with the same siding as the home’s facade,
which makes for a tailored, uniform look.
Still, it is the new fireplace that is the
ear focal point of the outdoor kitchen. The
Haddens, who also own a house in Maine,
envisioned a fireplace similar to those found
on the Down East coast. Through Charles J.
Precourt & Son in Sudbury, Massachusetts,
mason Brian Griffin of Millis, Massachusetts,
sourced the granite from a closed Maine
quarry. Because he used tailings – the
rejected pieces that had been left out for
years – the fireplace has a naturally weathered look. “When they are large enough,
the wicker bench on the second–floor
sleeping porch doubles as a bed during hot
summer nights; it is upholstered in an antique
rug salvaged from the Hadden family camp.
The screened porch is directly above the
overhang that shelters the three French doors
that were added during the renovation.
