hard edges were taboo. But an exercise in nostalgia was also unappealing. The idea was to
reinterpret the past rather than to re-create it
in a room designed to gracefully accommodate modern, multi-tasking elements.
Post-construction, the McCormicks’ airy,
canary yellow kitchen harmoniously combines
state-of-the-art equipment with materials that
evoke a bygone era. Clean-lined, country-style cherry cabinets cast a soft amber glow,
which is amplified by abundant natural light.
Highly textured elements such as bead board,
the lattice shelf under the center worktable,
and the limestone floor laid in a random-course ashlar pattern temper the sleekness of
the stainless-steel appliances and glass-fronted
cabinets, contributing to the room’s overall
mellow effect.
The new space is a magnet for visiting
family and friends, who relish tucking into
elegant, savory fare at Mary Ann’s table. “She
loves to entertain,” says John. “Mary Ann will
invite people over for dinner at the drop of a
hat.” And like all fine cooks, she is careful to
avoid overworking her recipes. Too many ingredients muddy the flavors. A
light touch in cooking as well
as in kitchen design is a good
thing. At least for now, Mary
Ann and the appreciative recip-
ients of her hospitality won’t be coming out of
the kitchen.
