controlling mesh shades rather than curtains,” says Hattaway. But the bold move to have the dining room in an
outdoor alcove came from the client. “Eating outdoors
in summer is a wonderful thing to do,” she says, “but I
wanted really usable space where we wouldn’t have to
worry about bugs or weather.” Remote-controlled retractable screens and shades solve both problems.
The homeowner likes to set the large teak dining table with her colorful collection of Deruta pottery. “When
I was a teenager, an aunt took me to Italy,” she says, “and
I’ve had a fondness for all things Italian ever since.” On
the trip, she discovered the colorful ceramics of the Umbria region of central Italy. While she revisits Italy often,
she has supplemented her collection with purchases from
Bellezza Home and Garden, a Newton, Massachusetts,
shop specializing in the pottery.
For casual breakfasts or a quick lunch, the family
gathers around the hexagonal concrete kitchen table that
Potter designed. It plays off the thick concrete countertops that complete the gray-painted kitchen cabinetry.
The kitchen opens to the spacious family room.
To define space within the open plan, Potter designed a
wooden ceiling panel. Beneath it, a glass-topped table,
a vibrant example of the 1980s work of the Memphis
Group, is used to play board games or work on puzzles.
If things get too crowded in the family room, or a few
cousins want to play a friendly game of eight ball, there
is the billiards room at the other end of the house, and a
playroom on the second floor. “With boys and girls and
different age groups,” says Visnick, “it was important to
the clients that there be options for kids and adults.”
Upstairs in the children’s bedrooms, the uniform
a family-friendly sectional
sofa and geometric carpet
float on the wood floor painted
shiny white. Although the
interior spaces are open and
contemporary, the oval
window is a nod to traditional
architecture found in the
area. For the exterior design,
“we were respectful of what
the Cape should be,” says
architect Burton Visnick.
