Clad in silver and bright red metal, the weekend home that Tim and Betty Egan built for themselves in New Hampshire is as striking as a modern
house and as sensible as a North Country barn.
A few years ago, while climbing the highest
peaks in the Northeast, the Egans discovered the
Franconia-Bethlehem area of the White Mountains and decided
to buy land there. Initially discouraged by lot prices beyond their
means, they stumbled across 17½ acres in nearby Sugar Hill for an
unbelievable $39,000. Alas, the lot was mostly protected wetland
and steep forest; less than an acre was buildable.
The Egans bought the land anyway and eagerly but methodically set out to realize their dream of a second home that would offer
an escape from the pressures of work, provide a base for outdoor
activities, and, not least of all, indulge their penchant for actively
shaping their domestic environment.
The Egans, whose primary home is in Milton, Massachusetts,
are both creative professionals. Tim, a documentary filmmaker with
two Emmys to his credit, is a producer with Moody Street Pictures
in Waltham, Massachusetts. Betty just launched Egan Williams, an
interior design business.
A story in The Boston Sunday Globe Magazine about an avant-
the barn section of the house (above) is clad in red corrugated
steel. The slope of the land allows for a walkout basement and also
gives an aerie-like quality to the porch, which from the interior, seems
to float over valley. Dark green windows add another punch of color.
